The hallways of Pivot Charter School buzzed with excitement as students stepped into the shoes of professionals from all walks of life during our Great American Teach-In! From the science of radiology to the art of tattooing, students explored careers they had never imagined, making this an unforgettable day of discovery, creativity, and hands-on learning.
A Day of Surprises, Skills, and Future Dreams
The day kicked off with an inside look at the world of emergency medicine. Kebreanna, a military medic, introduced students to the high-stakes world of battlefield care, where split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. Students got hands-on practice with basic first-aid techniques, gaining skills that could one day help them save lives.
Over in the medical field, Nichole Migliorato, a nurse, and Milagro Ramirez, a medical professional, pulled back the curtain on what it takes to work in healthcare. From patient care to medical diagnostics, students discovered that the medical world is full of opportunities for those who love to help others. Meanwhile, Aaliyah McCrary, a physical therapist, showed how movement can be medicine, guiding students through simple therapy exercises and explaining how physical therapists help people regain their strength and independence.
As students moved through the stations, they got to experience careers that most had only seen on TV. David Fernandez, a volunteer firefighter, let students gear up in real firefighting equipment, giving them a glimpse into the bravery it takes to run toward danger. Later, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue rolled onto campus with a full fire truck, and students got an up-close look at the tools firefighters use to battle blazes and save lives.
One of the biggest surprises of the day? Tattoo artistry. Students couldn’t believe their luck when they got to test their creativity on tattoo practice skin, guided by Terell from Pinup Tattoo Studio. They quickly learned that tattooing isn’t just about ink—it’s a highly technical and precise craft that blends art, skill, and patience.
Another eye-opening experience came from Andrew Laing, an elevator constructor, who shared his expertise on building and maintaining elevators. Students were fascinated to learn that elevator construction isn’t just about assembling machinery—it involves a deep understanding of mechanics, electrical systems, and engineering. Beyond sharing details about his own career, he introduced students to the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) Apprenticeship, an opportunity for those interested in a hands-on career with strong earning potential and job security. Through the NEIEP program, apprentices receive on-the-job training and classroom instruction, setting them up for success in a growing industry. His session gave students a real-world look at how trade careers offer fulfilling and lucrative paths outside of traditional college routes.
Pivot also got a taste of the entertainment industry, thanks to DJ Teeka Green. She turned up the energy, showing students how DJs mix beats and set the vibe for everything from radio shows to concerts. Some students even got to try their hand at mixing music themselves, gaining a newfound appreciation for the skill behind the turntables.
The science of radiology also took center stage as Robert Davis, a radiologist, walked students through the power of medical imaging. Students were fascinated to see how X-rays and MRIs allow doctors to diagnose illnesses without surgery. The mix of technology and medicine sparked curiosity about the many hidden roles in healthcare.
As the day wrapped up, Cepeda McKay, a probation officer, gave students a powerful perspective on law enforcement and rehabilitation. His talk about guiding individuals toward better life choices opened students’ eyes to the importance of justice, accountability, and second chances.
Inspiring Futures, One Career at a Time
From trying on firefighting gear to tattooing practice skins and mixing beats, students got a one-of-a-kind, hands-on experience that opened their eyes to new possibilities. The Great American Teach-In wasn’t just about learning—it was about inspiration, discovery, and the first steps toward the future.
A huge thank-you to all the incredible professionals who took the time to share their passions and experiences with our students. You sparked curiosity, ignited dreams, and showed our Panthers that the future is full of possibilities! 🐾✨
